This is so fundamental that I doubt it will be of any assistance WD - but have you checked the exhaust ports to make sure they are not full of crud?
I got caught many years ago - back when British manuals spoke of "de-coking" the exhaust ports - with a bike with almost exactly the same symptoms. The exhaust port had carbonned itself almost closed - allowed the engine to run at idle but when any RPM was called for - the engine died.

Like a said - pretty fundamental - but pull a pipe off and have a look inside the port on the head - that was where the problem lay for me
